A weekend dedicated to running
Several races will take place prior to the Marathon de la Baie du Mont Saint-Michel, which gets underway Sunday morning at 8:30am at Cancale. The Marathon des Loustics, Saint-Malo 10K and La Malouine: three events for runners of all levels that will punctuate a weekend entirely devoted to the practice of leisure and competition running.
It is worth noting that the majority of runners in the Saint-Malo 10K will be females (58% of entrants). And what’s more several hundreds of them will also participate in La Malouine. Thursday and Friday, a thousand students will take part in the Marathon des Loustics, which is a massive relay race held on the coastal path.
With more than 4,000 runners having reserved their bibs, the Marathon de la Baie du Mont Saint-Michel solidifies its place as a headliner race on the French national calendar, just behind the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris. The competitors, whose average age is 41, will have the privilege to compete on a rolling course with the Mont Saint-Michel on the horizon for nearly the entire race.
An expected Kenyan or Ethiopian victory
Winner of the 2015 Marathon du Mont Saint-Michel, Eliud Magut will defend his title. The Kenyan, who has a personal best time of 2h10:32, will have to keep a close eye on compatriots Wilfried Kigen (2h10:26) and Moses Gaikarira (2h11:41). Other podium contenders include Ethiopians Dejene Kelkilew (2h11:21) and Tiruneh Chalachew (2h11:54). Ethiopia’s Alemayehu Hatimanot, victor of the 2015 edition, is among the pre-event favourites in the women’s race.
A.S.O. takes a stake in the race
The 19th edition of the Marathon de la Baie du Mont Saint-Michel inaugurates the partnership between Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.) and the association founded and presided over by Denis Craveia. “It is a great privilege to organize the Marathon de la Baie du Mont Saint-Michel whose influence in France and abroad is much more than just sport, emphasizes Yann Le Moenner, A.S.O. Director General. Our ambition is to continue, hand in hand with the association, the development initiated 18 years ago and to accentuate the international exposure of this magnificent marathon.”
Denis Craveia adds: “The partnership that we have initiated with A.S.O. will allow the marathon to take on another dimension thanks to a pooling of resources.”
